The coming future

January 09, 2015

A recent report by the German Convention Bureau presents the ‘megatrends’ of MICE industry  for 2030. According to this study, there are eight major categories that will influence the industry of meetings and conventions in the next years and what they will do in this order: technology, globalization, mobility, sustainability, including feminization, demographic change and diversity, ‘peak everything’, security and development.

The highlight aspects that are essential for us and provide the key in which we, of course, will get to work are:

Spaces and architecture

Despite the remote communications solutions, the events will continue to rely on central, convenient, or buildings with specific venues added values. The spaces for events and meetings require:

– Environmental certification systems, which are absolutely non-negotiable

– The temporary use of venues that can be easily assembled and disassembled.

– Participants will require pleasant and healthy environments (natural light, open spaces, good ventilation as well as brain food in a structured fixed venues market, where some paneled rooms are the maximum flexibility allowed, expect to see changes in the next. 15.

– Mobility is another aspect that will have more weight in the industry in the coming years, very accessible places, well connected and leaving the smallest footprint possible.

– Sustainability seems that begins to be taken seriously, besides highlighting the increased “regionalization” of meetings. On the other hand inexcusably certificates require certificates of good environmental practice in areas where meetings are held.

Transmission of knowledge

The demand for “learning spaces” is growing due to the increased complexity of our lives and relationships, the emergence of new learning processes, and the development of knowledge available. They will change the following:

– The “lifelong learning”, intercultural exchange and permanent access to knowledge will grow even more than we imagine to end up being lifelong learners.

– New tools for virtual conferences will be developed, and the famous “massive open online courses” in universities, will allow constant access to knowledge, which may come as part of conferences too. Why not integrate Internet content speakers at events?

– Hybrid Events: The events will become more complex to accommodate the demand for access to content away formats and duration of presentations, performing converging technologies (allowing interact remotely), light and sound, presentation skills and translation solutions feedback distance (ballot questions, share your knowledge, gaming …) will be developed. Many of these will be made via mobile apps.

– Relaxation of formats: formats will be tailored to the participants and the context, with examples (formats purely crowdsourcing between workers) as open space and BarCamp. These technologies require flexible spaces for a conference can consist of dozens of small discussions, the content can be captured effectively with smart boards for example.

Technology

– The exhibits include decentralized concepts that use several technologies: display at various locations will be connected to be visible under a central concept of event.

– Virtual and Physical: Face-to-face events with virtual elements are combined to create hybrid events.

– There will be a new segment of providers: to manage technology (a key aspect of events and evolving), a new type of provider, advisor will develop in on-site / off-site converging technologies.

We know that 2030 is a bit far … but 15 years is nothing. It really is important that we go preparing today for not meeting a mismatch between supply and demand. The event agencies like ours must be pioneers in the progressive introduction of these trends. Already said Pericles, “is not our task to predict the future, but be well prepared for it.”
